Many times people will confuse warts with moles, but these are two very different things. There are many differences in the makeup of moles and warts, but one of the major differences is their appearance. Moles have a rather constant shape and size, whereas a wart begins flesh-colored and grows into the grotesque shape of a cauliflower, although much, much smaller. Even the largest of warts are only a few centimeters in size.
Warts are caused by a virus. A virus known as verruca vulgaris infects the body, and this infection results in the development of warts on the soles of the feet. As the virus gains a better “toehold,” so to speak, in the body, the plantar wart grows really fast. The size of the wart inside the foot is about three times the size of the wart that can be seen on the foot. Plantar warts are very painful because of their size and their location.
There are all kinds of over-the-counter treatments for the removal of warts. Try them, but if they don’t work, you will need to see a doctor. Laser surgery is sometimes used to remove plantar warts. Cryotherapy is an advanced method of removing plantar warts that involves freezing the wart with liquid nitrogen. The wart turns black and falls off.
When all else fails, there is always the option of surgically removing a plantar wart. However, surgical removal is a last resort because the surgery is painful, recovery is slow, and often scars are left that are almost as painful as the plantar wart.
